Today, Monday October 10th, we celebrate World Mental Health Day, a topic that is well-known in our current society. Poor mental health in Australia is a growing issue, one that wasn’t helped by the Covid-19 pandemic. Looking after your mental health and wellbeing is just as important as looking after your physical health.

Our team here at HLB Mann Judd Insolvency take our mental health seriously, constantly checking in with ourselves and each other to make sure we’re feeling okay. We all take steps in our personal lives to ensure we’re staying on top of our mental health game. Here are some of the things we do to keep ourselves mentally healthy:

Greg: Partner
“You can’t pour from an empty cup. I prioritise my own physical and mental health so I can best help my family, friends and colleagues when they need me.”

Kim: Partner
“Whilst connecting with people is important, I find taking time to myself and having some downtime is what helps me keep my mental health healthy.”

Amy: Receptionist & Administration/Marketing Support
“For me, my mental health improves the more I’m outdoors. I find when I take the time to soak in the sun and breathe in fresh air, it allows me to clear my mind and mentally take a step back from what’s stressing me out and re-evaluate what’s going on in my life. The best way I enjoy doing this is a dip in the ocean or just a nice walk along the beach”

Rikki-Lee: Practice Manager
“I’m a strong believer in mind over matter and I always try my best to look at the optimistic side of any situation, easier said than done in some cases but the mind is such a powerful tool that just needs to be used the right way. Music has always been a big support and motivator for me, I love how you can put yourself in any type of mood you want just with the right genre/track.”

Laura: Insolvency File Support Officer
“Being in nature, and spending time with loved ones I have found is the best for my mental health. I love early morning coast walks, a quiet moment with a coffee on the weekend and going out for lunch or drinks with my partner, family and friends….it’s a great way to be able to debrief at the end of the week and gets those happy endorphins going.”

Louise: Insolvency File Support Officer
“The way I take care of my mental health is always making sure that I make time for myself whether it be getting my hair or nails done, going for a facial or to the beach whatever it may be. Making time for myself doing what I want to do and what makes me feel good ensures that I’m taking care of myself and my mental wellbeing.”

So what can you do to keep on top of your mental health?

  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle.
This benefits both your mental and your physical health, by eating nutritious foods, regular physical activity, getting enough sleep and having a healthy work life balance you are encouraging a healthy mind to body connect.
  • Connect with people.
There are lots of ways to connect, from a quick coffee with friends or chatting on the phone with family on a drive home. What’s important is having someone that you can talk to when you’re feeling distressed or confused. If you feel like you can’t talk to someone you know, there are resources available that put you in contact with people in similar situations, or trained counsellors who can talk you through what you’re experiencing and feeling.
  • Get the relevant information.
There are copious amounts of information available online when it comes to mental health, however, it can be overwhelming trying to find the information that is relevant to you. We have compiled a list of numbers and sites at the bottom of this article that make it easier to find what will be useful to your specific needs.
