On Friday 7 June, our team celebrated HLB Communities Day. This was a global initiative led by HLB International as part of its 50th anniversary. The idea was that all staff in the international network come together to give back to local and international community projects. HLB staff collectively volunteered 8,497 hours through 1,320 participants across 42 community projects. An incredible effort!
Our team chose to volunteer at Ronald McDonald House, adjacent to the Perth Children’s Hospital, in Nedlands. They run a fantastic program called ‘Home for Dinner’ where groups come in to cook dinner for the families whose children, brothers and sisters are inside the Hospital; about 100 people in total. Much to our relief, we were guided by a professional Chef who kept us in line and on task.
Before we started cooking, we were taken on a tour of the House and were blown away by the incredible facilities available to these brave families, the amazing staff and the love that had gone into what is a very sophisticated and modern building.
Proudly, we managed to cook lamb tagine, vegetarian shepherd’s pie (which was delicious if I do say so myself), chicken sliders, pasta salad, sweet potato fries, roast veggies, sausages and onions, zucchini and cauliflower, mini lime cheesecakes, strawberry and chocolate mousse, and a giant fruit salad in under two and a half hours.
Kim looked very comfortable cooking the sausages to perfection on the industrial-sized barbeque. Who needs a chef’s hat when you have a Dockers cap?
It was a real privilege to be able to meet and talk to so many families from all over Western Australia who are going through a really tough, challenging time in their lives. Some families had been living at the House for over a year, and some families had been there many times before as their children were undergoing repeated treatments. To make a small difference in their day by cooking them dinner was an extremely rewarding experience for all of us. It certainly put things in perspective and made us appreciate our health and most importantly our family’s health.
